UFC 271 took place on Saturday February 12, 2022, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, United States. The champion, Israel Adesanya, was aiming to make the fifth defence of his middleweight title reign. The Nigerian fighter had only lost once so far in his career in a move up to the light-heavyweight division, in a quest to become a two-division champion. Although Adesanya had failed in this pursuit he still looked well on his way to becoming the greatest middleweight fighter we had ever witnessed, and this bout was just another step on the road to that goal.

The challenger, Robert Whittaker, was an extremely talented Australian mixed martial artist coming off a three-fight win streak. In fact, his previous loss had come at the hands of Israel Adesanya when he knocked out Whittaker via a counter left hook. Unfortunately for Whittaker, this fight did not go his way either, although he made it through the five rounds the judges scored in favour of Adesanya via unanimous decision.
